We all have inner teachers, symbolic emissaries, and masterful mentors that inspire us to see our lives in powerfully transformative ways. Sometimes we ignore the internal ‘snooze alarms’ of those teachings, and other times, if we’re willing – and paying attention – we discover happily that we’re getting perfect gifts, tailored exactly to our current beliefs, moment by moment, to help us re-integrate aspects of ourself that seem to be separate from us. These healing and helpful lessons, that we often think we’ve abandoned or forsaken, return to us, patiently awaiting our invitation. As Kenneth Wapnick might say, the form of these teachers varies tremendously, but the content or symbolic message – if we’re observant – is kindness and shared interests.
Some times these teachings and teachers appear as people in the dreamy, surreal script we call our lives. In my case, there were several pivotal souls (among countless ‘others’) that contributed to what became this book. The first were, and in the case of my mother still are, my parents. My mother’s interest in all things metaphysical, as well as her giving, open-door extended-family approach to life and ideas has inspired me from day one and continues to this day. My father’s love of nature, sense of humor and generosity inspired a disciplined quest for integrity and inclusive community as well.
In my adolescent years, resonating with my mother’s spiritual inquiry, I became involved in an educational program in California called Creative Dynamics, taught by Floyd and Jackie Edwards. During this time, I was re-introduced to the idea of seeing the world as a symbol. Our metaphysical study groups looked at everything from The King James Bible to Jonathan Livingston Seagull to dreams and life itself as metaphors for our inner world. Floyd, who had been inspired by Yogananda and many others, introduced us to the Kybalion, now a century-old little gem of a book. It contains the seven Hermetic Laws that form the structure of this book. Floyd also introduced me to Freemasonry and the symbolism of geometry. Our group learned of the work of Jerry Jampolski and Marianne Williamson. Around 1984, I began studying A Course In Miracles (ACIM).
In 1991, Gregg Braden, a student of Drunvalo Melchizedek, gave a workshop in my mother’s living room and re-inspired my interest in what had become known as sacred geometry, which continues to this day. When I began thinking about this book, almost immediately after my first book – Sacred Geometry Design Sourcebook – was published in 1997, I had a very different vision of what it might become.
In 2007, I saw a documentary called “Living Luminaries” which featured a number of familiar teachers and Gary Renard, whose first two books were suddenly conveniently in front of me, thanks to another friend, Claire Krulikowski. I couldn’t put them down. Since then, I have been avidly studying and doing my best to apply the insights in ACIM, and enjoying the kinship of fellow students around the planet.
This book blends these seemingly diverse influences which all revolve around the principle of interconnectedness. I’m grateful for all, and hope you have as much fun and insight reading this as I did re-assembling, generalizing and linking the ideas.
